M is for Motherhood.

I wrote this to a friend from SF about going to Career Day at my alma mater:

The deal is I'd like to talk about Motherhood as a career. I have an MFA in studio art and I've done all sorts of other things but my business card says, "Mother." Motherhood, pregnancy, delivery, children etc. got such a bad rap many of our peers avoided it, until it was too late and very difficult. SO MANY of my classmates gasp when they hear I have 5 children and then they say, I wish I had just One. I just got a FB message today from a beautiful woman I knew at Urban saying the same thing.
Maybe careers for women aren't stressed as much as they were when we were in school, at least not at the expense of Motherhood, but I wonder...
My decision to get married and have children was not solely based on my religion. My brilliant grandmothers taught me about the importance of motherhood, as did my mother who, though very independent, chose to stay at home--her mother always had to work, a lot. All three demonstrated the power of the hand that rocks the cradle. And, all three expressed at different times that they wish they had had more children. Hmmm, 5, these days, is kinda dicey...
If you think the school would be interested I'm happy to come to SF anytime! So good to hear from you! H

Pretty dang sweet I'd say. :)

M is for a Mother's Fear...

Strange new problems are being reported in the growing generations of children whose mothers were always there, driving them around, helping them with their homework - an inability to endure pain or discipline or pursue and self-sustained goal of any sort, a devastating boredom with life.
