M is for Motherhood.

I wrote this to a friend from SF about going to Career Day at my alma mater:

The deal is I'd like to talk about Motherhood as a career. I have an MFA in studio art and I've done all sorts of other things but my business card says, "Mother." Motherhood, pregnancy, delivery, children etc. got such a bad rap many of our peers avoided it, until it was too late and very difficult. SO MANY of my classmates gasp when they hear I have 5 children and then they say, I wish I had just One. I just got a FB message today from a beautiful woman I knew at Urban saying the same thing.
Maybe careers for women aren't stressed as much as they were when we were in school, at least not at the expense of Motherhood, but I wonder...
My decision to get married and have children was not solely based on my religion. My brilliant grandmothers taught me about the importance of motherhood, as did my mother who, though very independent, chose to stay at home--her mother always had to work, a lot. All three demonstrated the power of the hand that rocks the cradle. And, all three expressed at different times that they wish they had had more children. Hmmm, 5, these days, is kinda dicey...
If you think the school would be interested I'm happy to come to SF anytime! So good to hear from you! H

FB re: tie dye tights on CRAFT magazine -- H's rant.

H: LOVE TIE DYE TIGHTS!!! Ah, Courtney ... I am just so sick of trying to turn my eyes away. If I never see another skanky, aggressive tattoo, 4" of saggy cleavage, butt cracks, butt cheeks, disfigured ears, nose/lip/eyebrow rings, that will be a-o.k with me. Also tired of trying to explain to my 6 year old daughter why/how/where people get pierced. Sorry, I'm pretty progressive, but I'm really sick of all the collective "individuality."
L. Norris
You waste a lot of energy on hating the things that people use to feel good about themselves. Sure, none of that is my taste but I don't see the need for judging them i.e. "skanky" or "aggressive". Women hating on women over personal style is disgusting to me.

So you're "tired of trying to explain to [your] 6 year old daughter why/how/where people get pierced." Seems pretty simple to me: "That's what they like, Darlin'. It makes them feel good/pretty/confident/happy/strong". Simple as pie.

R.B. well said. leslie. :)

M.D. Thanks Leslie...couldn't say it any better!

Also love the tights! At almost 57 I would definitely wear them!

H: Hey wow. I don't hate on anyone. I do LOVE how everyone looks naturally, really. I see a lot of children and adults hurting all over this country, and world, who could use some of the expressive pocket change & constructive energy ... just makes me wonder. Now, back to peace and tie dye. :)

Switching Newspapers

I've disliked the Deseret News for sometime (their point of view(extremely conservative), the shallow articles, the terrible "collage" art, their HORRIFIC food section ...) then they dropped 2 of our favorite comics, Lio and F-Minus. Today I am switching to The Salt Lake Tribune. I'm going to read by favorite, Bizarro via the my iPhone ap.

Here is a comment I left, via FB regarding another paper dropping F-minus for Justin, about a looser who lives at home with his spineless parents. Now, that is original and funny.

You might not receive a million letters/comments from readers but I bet the subscriptions continue to drop. Newspapers need more content, and BETTER content. Justin isn't quirky or funny. F-minus is both, and popular.

The Un-patriots?

Why is skanky, slutty, 90% naked, right-wing, cross-wearing Ann Coulter on my (FB) screen? Seriously, wouldn't you love to see Sean Hannity & Rush Limbaugh in that black tank top/cocktail dress she wears? There is a double standard for male & female right wing loud mouths. The hotter the woman the more authority...the uglier the man?  {FYI: I don't see these people as republicans, conservatives, or even patriots.}

Schools these days...

This is such a relevant conversation. The other part of the homework equation is the parent help/involvement. My kids school doesn't give homework to the grammar school kids but, due to budget woes, has project day (no school) once a month; required homeschool. It is very tricky to accomplish with 3 different (big) projects in one day. My parents Never helped with homework, which might not have been the best solution either. These days the school/home expectations are out of whack, and the school days/weeks/years are shorter. And while I'm at it ... remember when we had P.E.?

04 October 2009

Hmmm.

"On Friday [teacher's assistant] mentioned that [teacher] was disappointed that I left so abruptly. After arriving early and talking for about 45 minutes AND having written a List of negative things about [beloved child], AND the fact that I needed to drive to Logan (to get to the audiologist for N and M) that night, I stood up, explaining that I Really had to go. It still took me several more minutes to leave, even pausing in the hallway to look at student work."

I edited the above out of a letter/email. But I need to remember it. Sigh. Generally,(I keep reminding myself) if you are worried about something, you are right.

To give is to grow.

I've been feeling rather negative lately... well, extra negative.

N's hearing/processing is getting worse. Need to find a solution. Will an occupational therapist recognize something? This is a Big deal and I don't know what to do about it. The vicissitudes of his hearing drive me nuts, and really drive him nuts. No one else (except Dr. Pitt) seem to think it is unusual. They seem to think, "What?! He's deaf! Whaddya 'xpct!?"

Called Dr. Warren today about a 2nd implant today. He seems like a great doctor.

More Dr. visits. J's hip hurt mysteriously today. Another Dr. visit?

Lovely conversation with MVL and we even set a date (Woot! Woot!)!

Ginger was groomed today!

Noticed that I love to wash my hands in COLD, very cold water. One thing for the 25 random thing list.

There are yicky dishes in the sink.

Oh yeah, don't do Shrinky Dinks in the microwave, as N did. It kills (as in Dead) the microwave. Helium balloons and their strings kill ceiling fans too. FYI, just trying to help.

Hailey spin class interupted by a call about CI/earmolds? New rule: don't answer the phone. :/

6/16/09 --> I'm still annoyed that I answered the phone and missed a lot of class yesterday.
WF Bank and WInder Farms is/are driving me nuts too. The new Orem library check out stinks as well. I'm just going to crawl back under my rock until my mood gets better and vibes are going my way again.

OH MAN. I'm going crazy. Can't Bush & Co. leave already?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7784197.stm
(I wish I knew how to post videos... this one is worth looking up)

Have you seen Barney's Final White House Video?! (I saw it on the BBC site.) Who is this made for? Hasn't Bush & Co. been proven dorks?! Can't he go away, quietly? Now this? I'm about throw some shoes around!

The IRAQI shoe throwing journalist is a very brave man. This is elegant, poetic: "this is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog. (Hurl.)" It is amazing that the IRAQIS are demonstrating in the thousands in support of the journalist. Again, Bush's reply is, "So what?"

Please Obama family, get what ever dog you want but, Please don't make stiff, corny, useless videos. Not that you would...

LTR: S is for Slimy televison.

A neighbor and I were talking about Swingtown's trailer and how sick it made us feel. She said she wanted to write a letter, (I joked that I am developing a talent in that field.) I also mentioned that I saw an article in Newsweek about Swingtown.

Tonight C and I were discussing all sorts of things about the Gospel and having the light and then denying it. We worry about our children. After a while I broke into the chocolate chips and headed into my studio where the Newsweek from June 9, 2008 greeted me. Folded back with a few post-its/letter ideas stuck to the article. I googled CBS television and this is what I wrote:
.....................................................................................
A while ago I saw the trailer, during the day, for Swingtown. It made me ill. Is this a show about relationships between people or how to destroy individuals, let alone families? Is this the best CBS can do, or simply the lowest you can get?

There is a lot more to write about regarding what is on television... sanitized prostitution, sexualized children, revealing clothing, objectifying women, "authentic" deception, homosexuality as natural. Why not a show on shepherds and their sheep? CBS could advertise it as biblical!

Swingtown is one more example of why I don't watch much television or many movies. It is easy to resist because that kind of pervasive, smelly slime just brings me down and desensitizes me to what is good, beautiful in this life. Also, I really don't want television's prurient slime around my children, husband or in my home.

Thanks for listening.

H is for Happy. As in: I am so happy that I FINALLY snail-mailed the letter to Dr. McP at BYU.

In the process of clearing off my desk I am finishing things up, as well as throwing things out. Several weeks ago I wrote a long over due letter to a department chair at BYU. I emailed it. Still haven't heard from him... Today I put a copy in the mail. I showed K (13) and told him how when I was a kid this is how we wrote to people. I let him touch the envelope! He even chose the stamp.

An aside: About the same time that I emailed Dr. McP at BYU I wrote to ORSON SCOTT CARD! about a great article he wrote about Good/Better/Best Mormons. That is my title, his was "Heyborne in the age of Purity." Here is the link to the article in Mormon Times: http://www.mormontimes.com/ME_blogs.php?id=1346

Mr. Card actually wrote ME BACK! Promptly! A lovely multi-paragraph email. Drat that I can't publish it here. He asked me not to, which is understandable. I'm not publishing my letter to him either lest I offend all the Mormons I know, that I know are so much better than I... neighbors AND relatives! (thin ice zone) Anyway, I haven't heard from BYU's Dr. McP.

Here is the BYU letter:
Since BYU’s Speech and Language Clinic director Lee Robinson told me last August that both of my deaf children were being dropped from BYU’s roster, I have wanted to write this letter. Now almost a year later I can tell a more complete story.
In short: Ms. Robinson called us last fall and left a message that there was no longer space for my children; possibly there would be space for the winter semester. She called again in January saying there wasn’t space for either of them. By the abrupt cut off of services it was clear that the clinic’s priority is not to provide consistent and fair services to children, but rather to accommodate the students’ changing numbers and needs. This practice hurts the children and families the clinic is meant to serve, especially since there are so few speech services for deaf children in Utah County.
Here is our story: My daughter M was implanted January 2007, she was just 3 and had been going to speech therapy at BYU for at least one semester. Ms. Robinson decided that since M would not be activated for a month there wasn’t any use in continuing therapy; she was abruptly dropped. I was not consulted, or even asked. When I asked the graduate student who called in January if I could talk to Ms. Robinson the student said that I wouldn’t change her mind.
This decision was not only rude, it was wrong. The first weeks after a young child is implanted and activated is crucial to her development. Also, during the time before the activation M could still hear with her very powerful hearing aid on the un-implanted side.
I had been told she would definitely be in for Spring term. She wasn’t. Fall? She wasn’t. This unfortunate situation was compounded by the fact that the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind (USDB) was asleep at the wheel and didn’t start promised therapy until May. Our insurance and the ENT surgeon didn’t offer any therapy or suggestions.
As M mother, not a doctor or therapist, I knew there was a serious problem. I spoke to the audiologist who mapped M's implant and he recommended that I call Dr. Susan Naidu at the University of Utah. She was very kind and promptly set an appointment for a diagnostic evaluation. I asked about their waiting list. They don’t have one. BYU’s is about 3 years I was told when I first applied. Deaf children sometimes jump to the top since the students need to work with deaf children.
M started speech at the University of Utah immediately. She looked forward the therapy and I watched each session. The students were professional, prepared and always happy to see and work with M. Perhaps the best part of the experience, aside from the promptness of getting the needed services, was that Dr. Naidu also observed the therapy, joined in as necessary and shared insights and gave advice about CIs and deaf children. The differences between the programs and the directors are stunning.
I noticed at BYU that even though the therapy rooms and observation areas had been recently remodeled the professors rarely spoke with me; they were down the hall, behind a locked door. Also, my other children were not allowed to watch or participate at BYU. This was often difficult and unfortunate since siblings are sometimes the best language teachers. The student therapists would talk to me and then talk to their supervisors for answers, which I would receive the following session.
My son N also has a cochlear implant. He is now 7 and was implanted at age 6 after about 11 months of not hearing due to a sudden drop in his hearing and a prolonged battle with insurance coverage during which time he received therapy at BYU.
He was not dropped from the BYU program until the fall. Ms. Robinson said he would have a spot in January. When she called again to say, “Sorry.” I was not surprised but I was disappointed. Her reason was that there simply weren’t enough students to provide the therapy. Is this another department that BYU (Provo) is doing away with? If I had known that there was a possibility that the services would be so inconsistent I might have weighed my options more carefully.
We were not the only family dropped, and there are other children that were kept on. I don’t know what the criteria for removal was. It wasn’t solely need.
Ms. Robinson came across as cold and uncaring every time I dealt with her. Once while discussing payment she scolded my son for touching the small action figures in her office, that were at his eye-level. Another time she hovered in the entry waiting for me, to see if we were late? She never spoke to me and I found that odd. I had told the therapist that I couldn’t pick up all the children from 4 different schools, travel and make it on the hour. Once the time was changed to quarter-after the problem was solved.
After N was dropped I called Dr. Naidu. She was happy to work with N as well. The students and Dr. Naidu went out of their way to get N and M on the same days, times and in rooms where I could observe both children at the same time. I deeply appreciate their thoughtfulness.
The cost is about twice BYU’s rate. It should actually be much higher but since our insurance doesn’t cover speech therapy we get a discounted rate. The drive (twice a week) is grizzly, not only the cost of gas and environmental concerns, but the time away from home (minimum 6 hours a week, verses 2 1/2 at BYU) is what is especially difficult for us. My other children need a parent at home in the afternoon.
The lack of options for deaf children in Utah County is a primary reason that I am writing this letter and have tried to create a foundation to help deaf children in Utah County. When I mentioned this problem to Ms. Robinson she expressed little interest and said that BYU students would most likely not be available to participate at a new Utah County facility.
I hope that this letter helps BYU improve its Comprehensive Clinic services. I welcome hearing from you.
Sincerely,
H ...

Anyone notice that Bush has less than 200 days to go?

~Grin: slow, wide, lip-less, UM, UH, goofy grin.

As a very conservative friend wrote recently, "God save us all."

S is for Silly letter to Stampin' Up! !!!

Another desktop find:
This is a mini-fit over wasting time on a stupid stamp set, that I (still in purge mode) realize I also wasted money on. Then I wasted more time writing the letter. Which is time I'm glad I wasted. Received a lovely generic letter from the co. The long time art director is something of a poo-poo head, to be polite. It is such a corny name to write in a letter! !!! I wish I had been a bit more snarky and used it more! !!!

To Whom It May Concern:
In March I placed a Stampin’Up! order at a friend’s Stampin’Up! party. I have finally assembled all of it--this has been a drag. This process was made worse when a different consultant came over and showed me how I had mounted all my stamps wrong, by not cutting them close enough. The most annoying assembly project was the Wild West Alphabet. Many had to be microwaved, removed, re-cut and remounted. What a waste of time! And then I found the receipt. I paid $40.95 for the set! At least the individual stamps could have been die cut, as were some of the others I ordered.
Sincerely yours,
H

W is for Wendy's -- rediculous, again ... a letter for today.

Our experience today at Wendy's was so bad that it was comical. This was our order: 2 kids' meals, both with cheeseburgers, chocolate milks and vanilla frosties. One side salad with low-fat ranch. 2 large waters.

I was told the vanilla frosty machine "was broke." Fine, chocolate is ok. When our order came the kids' meals were missing the cheese burgers, the frosty cups were half full and the dressing was French. Also, the French fries were cold. The toys were DVD games that you have been giving out for about 6 months.

I had to park the car to get the cheese burgers. And then I saw the dressing.

Today I am writing because enough is enough. Whenever we go to Wendy's in SLC (Foothill) the order is screwed up; today it was more than the usual no cheese, no requested pickles or a missing fork for the salad. Once there was no meat in the chili. There used to be an order-taker that was incredibly rude, again almost comical. My children were begging to go there, regrettably I acquiesced.

Utah County Wendy's aren't much better.

B is for Bafflement.

Sideline: my bro' fears that the super delegates will go for Hillary. Nooooo!

bushclintonbushclinton? Nooo! Also heard that BJClinton had over 1000 affairs just in AK. I just don't get this. Why does the media make a deal out of Romney's great great grandfather being a polygamist over a century ago when Hillary Clinton is married to one? When I talk to other women and ask about this all but one have said that staying married to someone so unfaithful is an issue. Their marriage is sick. Her tears make me ill. Getgetgetoverit. Would Golda Meir cry? Even Dr. Ruth Westheimer -- she was a sniper in Israel.

McCain swears like a sailor in the senate? And he is 71 years old. Older than R. Reagan (69) when he was elected. Wish we could look up to a leader for a change.

Ha. Change! Missing Romney. Go Obama Go!

D is for Deleted comment.

Noelle wrote a great post about getting her children to help around the house. After reading it I ranted... not so cool on her site. Thought I'd post my rant here:

Amen Sister! I have the same &#&$%9248y!!! problem in my house. My new mantra is: HOUSE OF ORDER. I am just so $&^%#T*Y#(*%!!! fed up of doing everything for everybody. I sound an alarm, sort of a funny "Ohohohohoh!" when they drop trash, coats etc on the floor, leave dishes etc. They aren't getting away with anything. I stand over them while they finish a task and chirp, "Once a job you have begun never stop until it's done..." It is making a small difference. And often I am making myself sick and tired; this is not my natural style, but that wasn't working either. :P

X is for my LETTER to X96.

For those of you not in Utah, X96 is a radio station with a cool morning show. The rest of their programming is alternative music. I just wrote this letter and thought I'd post it.

Years ago my friend Elizabeth Pfau asked me if I was going to be one of those "letter writing Moms?" YEP. One (more) reason for the name of the blog.

Hi Bill, (and Kerry and Gina),

I listened to your show on Thursday. I had been looking forward to it for the week before, then Thursday morning I was stuck forgetting about it while writing an email to my son's teacher, and ccing his audiologist. My 10th grade daughter reminded me. (Its hep that we can both listen to your station.)

Anyway... to attempt to be brief:

• We have 5 children, our 2 youngest are deaf, both have cochlear implants. They are 7 and 3 years old. Our 7 year old is in 1st grade and is mainstreamed. Everyone is amazed at how well our children hear and speak. We are too!

• Our son heard with hearing aids and then lost the rest of his hearing around his 5th birthday. That is a recipe for frustration. Although we signed with him he knew how much he was missing. He was a miserable kid to be around. The CI has completely helped him emotionally and with communication. We had to fight our insurance company to cover it. (Our cost would have been $80K!) He still needs speech therapy but that story is kinda long...

• Cochlear implants are miracles, not "satellite dishes" on heads. Is a diabetic pump on a child, or adult, something to disparage? Also, children born with hearing loss into hearing families are no longer sent to "residential" schools, isolated from their families, since they can learn to hear and speak so much more easily than in the past. Cochlear implants are the future for deaf children and adults.

• Deaf people who can speak, statistically, have MANY more options to them. They are autonomous people. From my vantage point I can't imagine saddling my children with a lifetime of being accompanied by an interpreter and never spending time with grandparents, cousins and other extended family and friends because the rest of the world doesn't sign. We sign some and don't have a problem with it, but I don't expect the rest of the world to. If our family only spoke French wouldn't it be odd to demand that everyone around us learn French? Yeah, yeah, we should then move to a French speaking county... again, AWAY from everything we call "home."

• The bit about "dating a deaf" girl kinda freaked me out. For many sick and wrong reasons deaf children are sexually abused more than other children. I don't care how hot the deaf girl was in the studio, it just didn't sound right to me. How to get to know a deaf girl or boy? Say hello and wave. I can't clarify my thoughts here... fear for my kids? or the memory of the weird friend of friends that told me that he always wanted to have sex with blind girl? --just because, he said. Girl? Blind? Again, I'm not at all articulate here, but it's just not something to encourage, at all.

• The bit about deaf education was right on. There is an excellent new program that just started in Logan called Sound Beginnings. http://www.usu.edu/ust/index.cfm?article=15151 It would be cool if you talked to Karl White from that school about what is going on for the Future of deaf children. USDB is a fairly whacked out place. Funny thing is they just don't listen. In Utah County I am involved with a foundation that is trying to get off the ground called Journey to Hear, to create a great preschool that is not in +20 year old trailers...

Thanks for paying attention, which is what I tell my children to do, since listening, whether hearing or not, is tricky.
Keep being original. Your show is great.

H ...

p.s. Good luck to Gina. And good luck finding a sub. My daughter wanted me to enter... would've been cool. There is a spin teacher at Gold's Gym in Utah County... RONA! She would be fantastic! Even for a guest spot. She has a large devoted following. Amazing teacher.

P is for Peppermint.

I have written a snarky letter to the features editor of the Deseret Morning News, about the food editor, but I really don't want to send it. Why? Ah shucks... how would I get my kicks on Wednesdays? This Wednesday's lead recipe? You guessed it: Peppermint cheesecake! (Dry laughter.) I am not a fan of mint, but even if I were I can't imagine enjoying toothpaste in my cheesecake.

Another favorite of mine is the recent title of an article: "Get crackin' — When it comes to baking, you can't beat eggs."

I didn't make that up! Sounds like somethin' dear ol' Bush might say to one of his buddies.

06 November 2007

C is for Crappy Children's Books. :P

Been spending lots of time going through crap, crappity crap crap. This afternoon was no exception.

Back to the pile of crap children's books. I have several friends who post delightful bits about fine children's books. This is not one of those posts. Don't buy anything. Especially not children's books. Read them at Barnes and Noble. It is a racket! The kids don't need ANY books from the Scholastic Book Fair, no matter how excited they are about a paperback that they will read once in less than half an afternoon. Get to a LIBRARY! It is a consumer myth, designed to make you buy MORE, that children need to own bookS.

One part was organized (pictures to follow) and then I looked at the HALL WAY! MORE!!! More, more, more books. We do have favorites; the list is short:
Elmer the Elephant
Woway for Wodney Wat (I'm not sure about the spelling)
Red Hat, Blue Hat
My Monster Mama Loves Me So
Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig
Hand, Hand Finger Thumb
Flat Stanley
Red Fish Blue Fish ...
Dr. Suess' Sleep Book (It is soooo good! True confession: I didn't finish reading that book, (kept falling asleep,) until I was at least 12.)
It's a Spoon not a Shovel
anything by Sally Mavor (even though her stories are kinda weak.)
So You Want to be President?

Do we really need books about Science Fair projects? Pumas? even Sardines, for Pete's sake! No toys and no books this Christmas! Ah, ah, ah!!!

By the way, I am hoping to donate many of these unwanted books to schools, especially Utah School for the Deaf, HOWEVER: so many of these books are simply crap that they are not even worth donating!
