G is for Grief for Ginger & C is for Celebration

Hello Dear Friends and Family,

This is a sad email.
Tonight [5/13/12] we put Ginger, our beloved +14 year old beagle, to sleep. This past week her kidneys and liver were rapidly shutting down, but her heart had a hard time letting go. We have too.

She couldn't move very well but continued to watch me in the yard, the house, upstairs. I wanted to give her space and some peace and yet wanted to stay with her as she has stayed close to me through happy times, illness and heart ache. The last two nights I spent a lot of time with her outside, where she wanted to be in the 43º mountain air. I don't know how she survived the cold, damp and breezy nights. It must have been hard on her. She returned to the house early Saturday morning only to go out again a few hours later. Dogs often leave their pack when they know it is their time. The bittersweet irony of our yard being more beautiful than ever: it made a heavenly place to try to convalesce. Each child quietly visited her, lay down next to her, sang to her, prayed for her, cried over her and gently pet her incredibly soft fur and velveteen ears.

Ginger was an unusually sweet, kind, smart, beautiful and patient friend. She was a one dog welcoming committee with a special howl, wag and dance routine. She was a natural vocal coach. I love that she perked up a bit tonight when I sang a beagle version (howl on the Oos) of "Tell Me Why." She was also exceptionally helpful cleaning the kitchen floor and somehow the table tops, even recently! In her prime she was a marvelous, tireless, and curious walking companion -- this last year she loved walking with Christopher almost every day. She helped raise S, K, J, N and M and has taught all of us many lessons of love, service, understanding and compassion. Today we learned about real pain and what a broken heart truly is.

When I was so busy this past year in the mornings I really missed her. I missed letting her out in all sorts of weather and missed her incredible enchanting eyes lovingly and patiently watching me as I made lunches. Many pieces of sliced turkey or chunks of tuna somehow fell off the counter onto the floor where Ginger enthusiastically cleaned them up. She could tell when I was going to work or going on a walk at -5:00 in the morning and lately chose to stay in her extra comfy bed on the floor by the head of my bed, preferring to wake up later with Christopher. Often I just wanted to be home to be with her, her sweetness and softness. The walks I wanted to go on with her were replaced by tandem naps ... I'd return home and flop onto my favorite chair, then she would jump onto her favorite chair, next to mine, I'd put on my eye shades and we'd both snooze. She has followed me everywhere for years, making a parade when the children were little: Mom + Child + Dog. She loved picking up the kids from school ... she always got "shotgun!" It was touching that she seemed very content in the family van this evening.

She is, and will be, sorely missed. C's and my grief is only compounded by looking at the children's faces at this time. Our memories are full of funny and sweet stories.

This has also been a beautiful time of being together, serving Ginger and each other, talking, holding on, singing hymns, praying and simply loving and remembering Ginger Muffin, our very generous furry sister. Spending time with close family and timely visits from Ginger's favorite people have helped us see connections within the bigger picture.

Today was also S's 20th birthday and Mother's Day -- Ssaid it best:
Today was a celebration of Life.

Many of you are Ginger's friends so I thought you would want to know. As our friends and family we appreciate your love and understanding.

Onward, with a heavy heart and lots of love,
Hailey

To give is to grow.

I've been feeling rather negative lately... well, extra negative.

N's hearing/processing is getting worse. Need to find a solution. Will an occupational therapist recognize something? This is a Big deal and I don't know what to do about it. The vicissitudes of his hearing drive me nuts, and really drive him nuts. No one else (except Dr. Pitt) seem to think it is unusual. They seem to think, "What?! He's deaf! Whaddya 'xpct!?"

Called Dr. Warren today about a 2nd implant today. He seems like a great doctor.

More Dr. visits. J's hip hurt mysteriously today. Another Dr. visit?

Lovely conversation with MVL and we even set a date (Woot! Woot!)!

Ginger was groomed today!

Noticed that I love to wash my hands in COLD, very cold water. One thing for the 25 random thing list.

There are yicky dishes in the sink.

Oh yeah, don't do Shrinky Dinks in the microwave, as N did. It kills (as in Dead) the microwave. Helium balloons and their strings kill ceiling fans too. FYI, just trying to help.

This is Ginger showing me how to get it done.

A very Beautiful Beagle!

Nathan (see the shoe) took this picture. I think it is one of my favorites of Ginger the Beloved and very Beautiful Beagle. Don't snuggle a bit too close though... she snaps, when sleeping, in her dotage.

L is for Lucky!

N saw this and said, "MAAAAAAHHHHHMMMMM, [Mom] you are so lucky!"
I said, "Ya know... the harder you work the luckier you are."
S (16) said, "Whoa. You are amazing." Meaning... where do you keep all these corny sayings?

This is from Utah Valley Magazine. Last year when the home tour was canceled I called UV Mag and told them that our house was kinda decked out, might be good in a future Christmas issue. Jeanette Bennett and her husband came by and took lots of pictures. Fun! Doesn't quite capture all the glitter though. ;)

U is for the #1 beagle Uno at Westminster Dog Show!!!

Now this is news to celebrate!
A beagle finally won very best at the Westminster Dog Show! AhhhhhhOooooooooH!
The video of Uno winning is exactly how I remember the beagles at the first dog show I ever went to in 1986. My incredibly fun Mother asked if I wanted to go to the dog show. (We are plagued with allergies so we were not a dog family during my growing up.) Going to a dog show? Sure!
We went to the Cow Palace (real name) and wandered around and sat down for part of the competition. Out came all sorts of dogs, and people. Everyone was so stuffy, serious and coiffed in a ridiculous way. Then, it was love at first sight, the beagles came out. Naturally elegant and sleak and yet playful, smart. No liver treat could keep them walking in a straight line, they in an honest dog like fashion, sniffed everything; they trotted and danced about. Before I knew what I was saying, I said: I want one!

The other day K asked me, out of the blue, if my life would have been different if I hadn't gone to that dog show. What a great question for a 12 year old boy to ask. I thought about it. Yes. My life would have been very different. Shortly after that show my parents in their generous way bought a tan and white beagle for me. Silly (a.k.a Silas Starbuck) was my first dog ever. Then, shortly after that, they booted the both of us out of the house! A fiendish plot: get the girl (21 years) a dog, dog can't stay at house with allergies, both move out!

Silly taught me about everything, and I have often marveled at how little I knew before he became my private tutor. He taught me about routine, discipline, the need for boundaries (fences), natural talents, change, making friends, dog people, daily exercise, a dog's needs, habits and health. Many prayers were said and answered about/for him. Most especially he taught me about unconditional love.

3 beagles later I am still learning. Ginger is all about fun, smarts, beauty, her specialty is sweetness and sensitivity. There is nothing better than silky beagle ears on a sad day.

Way to go Uno! Finally beagles get the respect they have long deserved. First time in 100 years at Westminster, a standing ovation! trounced the pom pom poodles and the yappy terriers! AhhhhOooooooH!

In a little bit I'm going to take Ginger on a celebratory walk.
