My father and his tribe (the lucky ones) immigrated to America just as WWII started. For them, their 1st priority was to learn English. When immigrants learn English they do so much better than if they isolate themselves in their community. I hate the narrow attitude of "English only" --believe it or not, in a design co. that specialized in TRANSLATION, a guy told us that-- but one language should be strongly encouraged for the strength of the country and the individuals. And how 'bout those crazy Americans that go to Germany and learn their language!? You are my hero, btw.

L is for lost Leo?
Leo? Gone from the Deseret News? Wrote a letter:
Hello,
Although we read other bits of the paper, that is all that is now left, now that all the articles are so short. I subscribe to the Deseret News for one reason: the Funny Pages.
Our favorite are:
Bizarro (when you drop that, we will simply cancel our subscription).
Leo
Pickles
Baby Blues
Mother Goose & Grim
Mutts
All my children are very sad that Leo has been replaced by the very unfunny Fort Knox. Deflocked and Cul de Sac are drippy and unfunny as well, and, if possible, getting worse.
I told my 9 year old son, who is deaf and related to Leo, that I would write to you for him, but I am sad too. Please don't skeletonize the funny pages.
Thank you for your attention.

L is for Let's do Lunch.

The waining days of the school year... Now I will talk about packing lunch.
In the last two years I have had to make lunch every day. This used to be just too much for me and yet now I am a master. Love notes, special candy, sandwiches to envy, worthy trade-ables and fight worthy home made cookies. Today I made some for a last lunch celebration and to give to the wonderful office women, they are geniuses! Also a special bus driver.
One thing that has developed is the decorated lunch bag. This is K's for today... M helped with the idea.

L is for the Letter of the day, to USDB.

It probably doesn't come as a surprise that I write letters ... everyone does these days with emails and general bigmouthedness. This is my letter of today. Last week my letter was to the legislators about supporting an appropriation that would help USDB. Last Friday night there was a meeting with the Karl White (Sound Beginnings) and Tim Smith (USDB) camps. USDB came off as defensive, petty and they lied about several things. The situation is pretty ... pretty sickening.
The following is a letter I wrote and yet did not send. USDB, the staff, administration, teachers do NOT listen and do NOT want to change or improve their program. To quote the superintendent, "We have the best program there is. And until I see proof of a better program we're not changing." What a visionary; how progressive. By the way, USDB, in 1990, won an award from the AG Bell Association for best public deaf program. 18 years ago?! In any field that is a long time ago, in deaf education that is antebellum, even before the CI revolution!
This letter sounds fairly pleasant and yet ... C and I wonder how it would be received. Not very well, probably defensively. Never forgetting they have THE best program out there.
Hello L [M's (dedicated) teacher at USDB],
What size will the Valentine book [M needs to bring pictures of things she loves] be? I thought I'd cut/choose the pictures to fit the book. Also, several of my friends make books. All sorts of art books and simple heirloom/keepsake books. They have taught me and I'd be happy to show you, or Nichole, samples or instructions.
Also, I would love to talk with you (or anyone at USDB, Marilyn, Kim) about Karl White's proposal, what you thought of the meeting on Friday night. What do you think the future of USDB is? Would that be productive? I think the parents' perspective is very different from the school's.
I loved the comment from the father, if someone wants to help improve USDB why not accept the help? I have felt this same way with USDB and getting a new facility for the pre-school (with Journey to Hear); I've met one road block after another. I admire the way Dr. White looks at situations and figures a way around them. I don't want to put you on the defensive, I am not "venting," to use your term, just saying USDB is in a position to benefit from Dr. White.
Thanks for listening, [Yeah, right.]

L is for Look, through the window.
For Withers it’s all quite simple. He says, "I write and sing about whatever I am able to understand and feel. I feel that it is healthier to look out at the world through a window than through a mirror. Otherwise, all you see is yourself and whatever is behind you." For Withers it’s all quite simple. L is for very Large Lego Litter.

"Speaking disassembled English: Children play near an 8-foot-tall smiling Lego man that was fished out of the sea in the Dutch resort of Zandvoort. Think the missing word is "less"?"
Found this at Day in Pictures, on my homepage: sfgate.com
Hey, Olpin Family! Did you ever run into this cheery fellow while adventuring in Denmark?
What about Legos and other plastic toys floating about in the sea?

L is for LETTERMAN! This is it, man.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK3fW1tv8Sw
It is plain that I love letters and this is probably one of the many reasons why: the 70's TV show THE ELECTRIC COMPANY! (Also, my mother subscribed to a great magazine called U&lc.) I loved that show. My older brother loved Star Trek. It was a daily battle.
The Adventures of Letterman! One Halloween C dressed as Letterman! Now I realize that the Letterman! of my childhood wore a football helmit and NO cape, very progressive for a super hero.
I'm not quite as tech savy as I'd like to be so I'm not sure if this is going to work... If it doesn't, and even if it does, go to you Tube and search for The Electric Company. It is a lot of fun. Several seasons of the show are (easily) available on DVD. SKJN&M (and C&H too!) love to watch them.
Why is it so difficutlt to create great Chidren's programming these days? Compare the subtle humor and simple art to the humorless, pedantic and hyper styized Barney, Dora; even Sesame Street is so tech heavy that it lost a lot of its magic. Have you watched Journey to Ernie lately? UG.

Make the LOGO bigger
L is forhttp://www2.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif BIGGER Logo.
from my girlhood friend E. So perfect, although we do love our clients and they are possibly right... 5 point type is hard to read and (gasp) their logo is too small.
